Why K-Pop is Obsessed with Music Sampling: with MEOVV and NMIXX

Recently, various K-pop artists, such as MEOVV and NMIXX, have been releasing music that utilizes sampling. Let’s take a look at what sampling is, its related copyright issues, and its advantages.

Sampling originally started in the hip-hop genre. In the early days, hip-hop producers used existing songs without authorization to create beats, which was a common practice at the time. However, as hip-hop emerged from the underground into the mainstream music market, it faced serious copyright issues. Today, sampling has resolved these problems. Artists now obtain formal permission from the original creators or legally purchase tracks from sample CDs and music distribution platforms designed specifically for sampling. Furthermore, sampling includes utilizing any existing sounds, such as interviews or everyday noises, not just music.

First, MEOVV’s "Ttirori" utilized Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor - BWV 565 as its highlight section. While the overall quality of the song was good, the sampled "Ttirori" melody was so dominant that the other parts of the song were not very memorable. Second, NMIXX’s "PODIUM" sampled Sasha Wrist: Latin Fuego Vocals by VOX, which is listed on Splice, a popular sample platform for music producers. In the intro and chorus of "PODIUM," the vocals from VOX were sped up and used along with repetitive lyrics. Overall, choosing to use these vocals in a talk-like melody—where the chorus and bridge are hard to distinguish—must have been a difficult choice, especially since the song's dreamy atmosphere and clear beat already blended well enough. However, because NMIXX is a "Mixx Pop" artist with the ability to easily pull off even unconventional vocals, I believe it was a great challenge. Lastly, there is an opposite case where a global pop artist sampled a K-pop song. PinkPantheress’s "Another Life" directly quoted and sampled the lyrics "you melt up my body and all my heart" from f(x)’s "Ice Cream." Quoting a specific part of the lyrics or a melody like this is also referred to as a "replay." By using a fast-paced beat, "Another Life" features a completely different style from "Ice Cream"—to the point where you wouldn't even realize it was sampled unless you already knew the original song. 

In addition to these three methods, sampling is being utilized in a variety of ways. Although sampling is an excellent creative method, there are still many cases where tracks are sampled without the original artist’s permission. Furthermore, because original artists often choose not to file lawsuits to avoid complex legal disputes, sampling is frequently tied to plagiarism controversies. In fact, a DJ who released remixed tracks of third-generation K-pop idol songs recently had all of those remixed songs removed from music platforms due to an ongoing lawsuit.

최근 케이팝에서 미야오(MEOVV)와 엔믹스(NMIXX) 등 다양한 아티스트들이 샘플링을 활용한 음원을 선보이고 있다. 샘플링이 무엇인지, 그리고 이와 관련된 저작권 문제와 샘플링의 이점에 대해 알아보자.

샘플링은 원래 힙합 장르에서 시작되었다. 초기 힙합에서는 기존의 곡들을 무단으로 사용하여 비트를 만들곤 했는데, 당시에는 이것이 하나의 관행이었다. 하지만 언더그라운드에 머물던 힙합이 주류 음악 시장으로 부상하면서 본격적인 저작권 문제에 휩싸이게 되었다. 오늘날의 샘플링은 원작자의 정식 허락을 구하거나, 아예 샘플링용으로 제작된 음원 모음집(샘플 CD) 및 음악 유통 플랫폼에서 음원을 합법적으로 구매하는 방식으로 문제를 해결하고 있다. 또한, 음악뿐만 아니라 인터뷰나 일상 소음 등 이미 존재하는 모든 소리를 활용하는 것 역시 샘플링에 포함된다.

대부분의 샘플링은 기존 노래를 그대로 사용하는 것이 아니다. 비트를 쪼개거나 소리를 변형하는 등 다양한 형태로 가공하여 사용하기 때문에 창작자가 비교적 쉽게 좋은 영감을 얻을 수 있는 효율적인 창작 방법이다.

샘플링의 종류는 크게 세 가지로 구분되는데 저작권이 이미 만료된 클래식 음악을 활용하는 경우, 샘플링 전용 음원을 구매하는 경우, 그리고 기존 곡의 원작자에게 정식으로 허락(클리어런스)을 받는 경우가 있다. 각 경우의 샘플된 노래들은 제각각의 특징과 매력이 다르기 때문에 노래를 한 곡씩 소개해보겠다. 미야오의 띠로리는 바흐의 Toccata and Fugue in D minor - BWV 565을 하이라이트 부분으로 활용했다. 곡의 전체적인 퀄리티는 좋았지만 샘플링 한 띠로리라는 멜로디가 너무 큰 영향을 미쳐 노래의 다른 부분들이 기억에 남지 않는 것이 아쉬웠다. 두번째로 엔믹스의 PODIUM은 음악 프로듀서 용 샘플 플랫폼인 splice에 등재된 VOX의 보컬 앨범인 Sasha Wrist: Latin Fuego Vocals을 샘플링 했다. PODIUM의 인트로와 코러스에서 VOX의 보컬을 스피드업하며 반복되는 가사와 함께 사용되었다. 전체적으로 코러스와 브릿지가 구분이 쉽지 않은 말하듯 한 멜로디에서 위 보컬을 사용한다는 선택은 곡의 몽환적 분위기와 명확한 비트가 이미 충분히 어울렸기에 쉽지 않은 선택이었을 것 같다. 하지만 엔믹스라는 믹스팝 아티스트에게는 엉뚱한 보컬도 쉽게 소화할 수 있는 능력이 있기 때문에 좋은 도전이라고 생각한다. 마지막으로는 반대로 해외팝이 kpop을 샘플링한 경우이다. PinkPantheress의 Another Life는 f(x)의 아이스크림의 가사 중 you melt up my body and all my heart를 그대로 인용하여 샘플링 했다. 가사나 멜로디의 한 부분을 인용한 것은 replay라고 부르기도 한다.  Another Life는 빠른 비트를 사용하여 아이스크림을 몰랐다면 샘플링했다는 것을 알 수 없을 만큼 아이스크림과는 완전히 다른 스타일을 가지고 있다. 

이 세가지 경우 뿐 아니라 다양한 방법으로 샘플링이 사용되고 있다. 샘플링은 좋은 창작방법 중 하나이지만 원곡 아티스트의 허락을 받지 않고 샘플링을 하는 경우는 아직도 많으며 원곡 아티스트는 법적분쟁을 피하기위해 소송을 걸지 않는 경우도 많기 때문에 샘플링은 표절의혹과 쉽게 떨어질 수 없다. 실제로 3세대 아이돌 노래 리믹스를 해서 음원을 낸 디제이는 지금 소송으로 인해 리믹스 한 음원들이 모두 삭제된 상태이다.
